Talking is painful. Smiling is painful. Chewing is painful. Yawning is painful. These are all symptoms of temporomandibular joint disorder. TMD can make everyday functions seem like daunting tasks.
Is jaw pain interfering with your life?
Did you know?
Millions of American adults suffer from chronic facial pain, such as jaw pain, headaches or earaches. The source of these aches and pains may be related to one or both of the temporomandibular (TM) joints.
TMJ vs. TMD
TMJ stands for the temporomandibular joint, which connects the lower to the upper jaw. When the TMJ becomes misaligned or inflamed, it is considered a disorder of the TMJ, or TMD. As simple as these acronyms may be, a temporomandibular joint disorder can be quite complicated. The symptoms include:
- Headache and ear ache
- Neck ache and shoulder ache
- Tender or swollen face
- Jaw popping or clicking
- Pain while chewing, speaking, yawning, swallowing, even smiling
While women between the ages of 20 and 40 are at the highest risk for TMD, it can affect anyone at any age.

Braces Just Might Relieve Your Jaw Pain —
Braces are most commonly associated with straightening your smile, but they can also be used to treat TMD by correcting your bite. The way your teeth are aligned have a direct effect on your jaw joint. Properly aligned teeth allow the jaw to rest in a natural position that alleviates the pressure on the TMJ; proper alignment can also prevent the teeth grinding and clenching that tend to aggravate jaw problems.
