No Cutting or Sutures!

If you are considering laser gum surgery as a periodontal disease treatment option, you should have a thorough understanding of what the procedure entails. Below is a basic break down of the steps Dr. Marcus uses during the laser treatment to restore your overall gum health.

Basic Steps of LANAP®

How does LANAP® work?

Stages of LANAP in Chicago, IL
  1. At the onset of the laser gum disease treatment, Dr. Marcus uses a probe to measure the depth of the periodontal pockets so he can determine how deep the pockets are and how much loss of attachment has transpired.
  2. Dr. Marcus uses the PerioLase® MVP-7™ laser to remove bacteria and diseased tissue in the patient’s pocket. Since the light from the PerioLase® MVP-7™ is not absorbed in healthy tissue, bone, water, or root, laser gum surgery is far less invasive for the patient.
  3. Dr. Marcus removes the remaining calculus deposits that form beneath the gum line using tiny ultrasonic scalers. The ultrasonic scalers are used because the laser will denature the calculus deposits from the root surface of the teeth rather than removing them.
  4. Dr. Marcus applies the laser again at the bottom of the periodontal pocket to stimulate the bone, root, and soft tissue, forming a seal around the teeth. This allows the blood to begin clotting, thus creating a clean and hygienic environment for healing. He then recompresses the tissue against the root surfaces of the teeth without using sutures.
  5. Finally, Dr. Marcus will adjust your bite to ensure that the laser gum surgery did not cause any significant trauma to the teeth, particularly the ones with bone loss.
